Preparing for the First Piano Lesson

You can do the following things before your child starts their online piano classes: it will help in setting them up for success.

  • Create a distraction-free environment

Ensure you select a quiet, well-lit area for your child to learn comfortably and stay focused. Set up the piano or keyboard in such a way that their hands and face is visible to the teacher on camera.

  • Keyboard or piano setup

For beginners, a 61-key, full-sized digital keyboard is ideal. Ensure you place it on a sturdy stand, it’s plugged in and functioning properly.

  • Tech setup

For piano lessons, you will need a device, preferably a laptop or a tablet. It should have a stable internet connection, a camera, and a microphone. You’ll be required to log in to a video platform like Zoom, Skype, or a custom link provided by the classes.

  • Set the right mindset

Teach your child that, first lesson is all about having fun, enjoying the process of learning and meeting their teacher. No pressure to play a song right away.

What to Expect During the First Lesson?

Every child’s first online piano lesson is fun, engaging, and motivating. Here’s what you can expect from your child’s first piano lesson –

  1. Teacher introduction and comfort building

The first lesson is all about the introduction between the student and the teacher. The teacher will take time to connect with your child, make them feel comfortable, ask about their musical interests, and build a friendly rapport.

  1. Familiarise with keyboard

The teacher will help your child understand the basic structure of a keyboard, like black keys, white keys, and how to locate middle C. This is where your child will learn simple concepts like finger numbers and posture.

  1. Basic rhythm and notes

In the first lesson, they may be taught piano notes for beginners, including basic rhythms like quarter and half notes; it all depends on their age and attention span. It’ll be a fun and interactive session, which may include songs and patterns.

  1. Short activity or song

Kids start feeling more confident and excited when they feel a sense of achievement. That’s why we include small exercises or short melodies for them to try in their first class.

After the First Lesson: Practice and Assignments

Regular, light, and consistent practice is always better than long, tiring, and irregular practice sessions. By the end of each lesson, our teachers will assign simple exercises like –

  • Practising finger numbers
  • Playing a basic five-note scale
  • Repeating a rhythm clap-back game.

All these assignments are age-appropriate and fun-to-do activities. We suggest 10-15 minutes of daily practice for your child. Parents are always kept in the loop with updates and suggestions to support their child at home.

Progress Expectations

Before building expectations, it is important to realise that progress takes time and consistent effort. That being said, every child is different, and they progress differently. In the first month, expect your child to:

  • Recognise and play a few keys
  • Understand finger numbers
  • Follow basic rhythm patterns
  • Play simple melodies using both hands (gradually)

By the end of 2-3 months, your child may be able to begin reading music, identifying notes on sheet music, and playing songs using both hands. As mentioned earlier, consistency is the key, and the online piano lessons are structured to offer gradual and steady learning, thus always keeping your child’s joy of music alive.

4 Tips for Supporting Your Child’s Piano Journey

  1. Be their cheerleader

Every win, small or big, should be celebrated. So, whether they play their first song or just remember where middle C is, just encourage them to get better.

  1. Make practice part of their routine

Be sure to schedule a fixed time for daily practice (like after homework) for piano. Try online piano keyboard for practice if there is no access to physical piano.

  1. Sit in on lessons (occasionally)

Kids, especially the younger ones, feel confident when a parent joins the class along with them, or at least the first few minutes of class to offer encouragement.

  1. Let them explore

The only way to foster creativity is through exploring more. Encourage them to play and explore freely outside of the usual online piano lesson. Creativity fosters a love for music.

What are the Common Challenges and How to Overcome Them?

Following are some of the common challenges your child may encounter:

  • Attention span

Children often have less attention span; it may be more prevalent, especially if the classes are online. To ensure the classes are engaging for your child, we have designed our lessons to be interactive and introduced lthe atest music tech and digital tools. Also, our teachers are trained to make sure every session is engaging and hands-on.

  • Technical issues

A weak internet connection or poor camera angle can disrupt the learning process. Make sure to check your setup 10 minutes before class.

  • Lack of motivation to practice

Try a reward chart or praise their effort, not just perfection. Encourage them to play for family members – kids love to perform.

The Benefits of Online Piano Lessons

Now, coming to the most important and common question running through the minds of every parent, are online piano lessons as effective as in-person lessons? The answer is yes – and sometimes, even more so.

  1. Flexibility and comfort

Online lessons give you the comfort of taking lessons from your home, at a time that fits your schedule.

  1. 1:1 Classes

Unlike offline lessons, the piano online course gives every child the personalised attention they need. The pace is personalised based on the child’s strengths and challenges.

  1. World-class mentorship

Our courses are designed and certified by the Godfather of Indian Jazz and Grammy Award Nominee, Louiz Banks. Under his expertise, we have created piano lessons that are set in global standards and Indian roots.
